Organiser A.S.O. has paid out a total of 365,500 euros in prize money to the teams up to the first rest day of the Tour de France.

The majority of these, almost a seventh of the 22 teams in the race, were the team of three-time stage winner Jasper Philipsen - Alpecin-Deceuninck - at the Tour de France 2023. And the 25-year-old Belgian is also the main reason for his team's good performance. A stage win is rewarded with 11,000 euros in prize money for the team account, with half as much for second place. In total, the 20 best riders of each day receive prize money, but the last five only receive 300 euros each. Fifth place is still worth 830 euros.

A victory in an intermediate sprint brings 1500 euros in prize money at the Tour de France, second place (1000 euros) and third place (500) are also rewarded. The mountain classifications are worth less. Even the six mountains in the Hors Categorie only bring 800 euros for the winner and 450 and 300 euros for second and third respectively. The best rider in a 4th category mountain classification receives 200 euros.

Shirt wearers are paid daily

Two special prizes are more interesting in terms of prize money. The Jacques Goddet souvenir, which beckons the winner on the Col du Tourmalet, and the Henri Desgrange souvenir on the Col de la Loze bring an additional 5000 euros to the first person to reach the pass. The mountain prizes are awarded every year at the highest summit in the Pyrenees or the Alps.

The four winners of the special classifications will also be rewarded with prize money every day. The yellow jersey is worth 500 euros, while the points, mountain and junior classifications are worth 300 euros each day. In addition, the best U25 rider of the day receives 500 euros. 2000 euros are up for grabs for the most combative rider of the day. The best team of the day will receive 2800 euros each time.

Keyword team: At the end of each tour week, the best team player is chosen by a jury. They receive 3,000 euros for the team fund.

How much prize money does the Tour de France winner get?

The big money, which has not yet been paid out, will only come at the end of the tour. The overall rankings offer the biggest prize money. 500,000 euros will go to the winner of the Tour de France, the runner-up will receive 200,000 euros and third place will get half of that. For places 20 to 160, if they reach Paris, there will be 1000 euros each.

The winners of the sprint and mountain classifications each receive 25,000 euros, graded up to 8th place (2000). The four best young riders are honoured, with the winner receiving 20,000 euros, while the best five teams in the team classification receive 50,000 euros for the top team. The most combative rider of the entire tour also receives 20,000 euros in prize money.

Jumbo-Visma won the most prize money in 2022

The fact that many different rankings are rewarded with prize money means that the amount collected is always a good indicator of the teams' performance. The German team Bora-Hansgrohe ranked, mainly due to the stage victory of Jai HindleyIf the Australian can hold on to third place in the overall standings, Bora can still make a big leap forward in a fortnight' time.

The teams have barely made an appearance so far Soudal - Quick Step and DSM-Firmenichwhich is reflected in the minimal prize money. At 3640 and 3600 euros respectively, they are at the bottom of the list after the first week of the tour and are miles away from last year's earnings (42,430 euros).

The prize money ranking of the 2022 event was undisputedly secured by Jumbo-Visma 760,350 euros, of which Tour winners alone received Jonas Vingegaard accounted for just under 580,000 euros. The UAE Team Emirates in second place didn't even earn half as much. Lotto Dstny (then Lotto Soudal) brought up the rear with 10,140 euros.
