Former German cycling star Jan Ullrich has commented on the ARD documentary about his victory in the 1997 Tour de France.
"Of course I also watched it and it awakened great emotions in me," said Ullrich in an Instagram post. "I know I've had a very intense life with all its ups and downs. Of course, it awakens great emotions, as you can imagine."
The multi-part documentary and an accompanying podcast take an in-depth look at the life of the only German Tour winner. Only Ullrich himself does not get a chance to speak, as he is not allowed to do so due to an exclusive contract. Instead, numerous companions, such as his former long-term rival Lance Armstrong, are interviewed.
After his involuntary career end due to his exclusion from the Tour in 2006, Ullrich often got into trouble in his private life. In Switzerland, he caused a traffic accident under the influence of alcohol, and on Mallorca he had a row with his neighbour Till Schweiger. He also separated from his wife. Ullrich has been living in Merdingen in Baden-Württemberg again for a few years now and is said to be on the right track.
