The German women’s track cycling quartet are on course for a medal at the World Championships in Shanghai. The Tokyo Olympic champions Franziska Brauße, Lisa Klein and Mieke Kröger, along with 20-year-old Messane Bräutigam, clocked the second-fastest time of 4:09.978 minutes in the qualifying round and have therefore secured a place in the top eight. Only Great Britain were faster (4:08.055).
On Thursday, the German team – which has been a sure bet for medals for years – will be aiming to reach the final, which is due to take place in the Chinese metropolis this evening (13.48 CEST).
The German men’s four put in a creditable performance and, finishing sixth in the qualifiers, secured vital points in the race for Olympic qualification. However, with a time of 3:50.995 minutes, Max-David Briese, Tim Torn Teutenberg, Moritz Binder and Benjamin Boos finished a few seconds behind the top teams and are unlikely to be in contention for a medal.
