The German sprinter Phil Bauhaus has won the final stage of the traditional Tirreno-Adriatico cycling race.
After 159 kilometres in San Benedetto del Tronto on Italy's east coast, the 27-year-old won the bunch sprint ahead of the Italian Giacomo Nizzolo and Kaden Groves from Australia. It was Bauhaus' first victory of the season and the 18th win of his career.
"I feel incredible. I had a tough winter, but I knew I was in good shape. We knew there was a headwind on the home straight, so I hid for as long as possible," said Bauhaus.
As in the previous year, Tadej Pogacar secured overall victory. A place in the peloton on the final stage was enough for the 23-year-old from Slovenia to secure his third victory in the third race this year. This means that the two-time Tour de France winner is one of the top favourites for the Milan-Sanremo classic next Saturday.
Pogacar had practically sealed the overall victory on the penultimate stage. With an attack 16 kilometres from the finish, he left the competition behind and won by a large margin ahead of Tour runner-up Jonas Vingegaard. The Dane finished 1:52 minutes behind Pogacar.
