Commenting on the tragic death of Belgian professional Michael Goolaerts at Paris-Roubaix, Denk said in an interview with the "Münchner Merkur": "Something can always happen. And if it's unfortunate, then very serious accidents can happen. You can't compensate for that even with safety precautions. The danger is always there. As a racing driver, you always have to take that into account."
According to Denk, whose captain Peter Sagan won in Roubaix on 8 April, the professional cyclists had come to terms with the risk, "also because the danger is part of the business". During the race, the team boss was unaware of the tragic accident after 148 kilometres.
The 23-year-old Goolaerts had suffered a cardiac arrest and died in hospital in Lille the evening after the race. The French judiciary has launched an investigation.
