This cycling video has gone viral on social media: A helmet camera captures George Hincapie riding with a group of racing cyclists to the start of his Granfondo in Greenville, South Carolina. A deer suddenly appears from the left and flies over the group with a huge leap. The YouTube video was filmed by Edwin Gonzalez Montoya, who had to make himself very small. While Hincapie looks back in horror, things get really close for Montoya: the animal gets closer and closer and he just manages to pass underneath it and the animal fortunately only just grazes him.
Accidents involving wild animals are not entirely unusual. There have been several dangerous collisions between cyclists and deer in the past - particularly many in the USA. In 2021, a cycling video from New Jersey went viral in which a deer jumps across the road in front of a group of cyclists at a charity event.
