Das Hauptfeld kam zu spät.
It was like a painting for the fast men: But in Milan, breakaways annoy the sprinters. A Norwegian has the best legs.

Fredrik Dversnes has won the 15th stage of the Giro d'Italia in Milan as a breakaway rider. The Norwegian won after 157 kilometres on the Corso Venezia in the sprint of a four-man breakaway group ahead of the Italians Mirco Maestri and Martin Marcellusi. The main peloton was unable to catch up with the group on the final straight. Sprinter Jonathan Milan from the German Lidl team still has to wait for his longed-for stage win. A German rider did not make it into one of the first ten places.

Top favourite Jonas Vingegaard defended the overall leader's pink jersey, which he had won in the Alps on Saturday, without any problems on the flat 15th stage. Behind the Dane are the previous leader Afonso Eulálio from Portugal (2:26 minutes behind) and the Austrian Felix Gall (2:50).

In temperatures of more than 30 degrees, the breakaway group formed shortly after the start in Voghera. On the way through Lombardy, the sprinter teams let them go, but kept the gap stable at a good two minutes.

At the end of the race, there were four high-speed circuits in the fashion metropolis. With the last real bend two kilometres before the finish, everything was actually set for the sprint royal. But the peloton made a mistake and was unable to catch the breakaway.

Another mountain stage after the rest day

After the Tour de France and the Vuelta, Vingegaard also wants to win the third of cycling's three grand tours at the Giro. For the Dane and his rivals, the most important thing on Whitsun Sunday was to finish without crashing.

After the second rest day, a mountain finish in Switzerland awaits the riders on Tuesday. The tour ends in Rome on 31 May.
