The Laureus World Sports Awards, also known as the "Oscars of Sport", have chosen their winners for the year 2025. The Slovenian professional cyclist Tadej Pogačar from the UAE Team Emirates - XRG team was unable to win the prestigious "Sportsman of the Year" category. Instead, victory went to Swedish pole vaulter Armand "Mondo" Duplantis, who won gold at the Olympic Games in Paris and the European Championships.

Tadej Pogačar's outstanding performance at the Sport Oscars not rewarded

The US gymnast Simone Biles, who won three gold medals in Paris, came out on top in the Sportswoman of the Year category. In addition to Pogačar, who was the only cyclist nominated for the main category, Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, Dutch Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen and French swimmer Léon Marchand Duplantis were also beaten. Despite his outstanding performances in the 2024 season, in which Pogačar won the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France and the road race at the World Cycling Championships, among others, it was not enough for the Slovenian to take the top honour.

While Pogačar came away empty-handed, another cyclist was able to celebrate at the Laureus Awards. Briton Tom Pidcock secured the title in the "Action Sportsperson of the Year" category. Pidcock, who successfully defended his gold medal in mountain bike cross-country at the Olympic Games in Paris, beat off stiff competition from sports such as skateboarding, surfing and snowboarding.
