Last year's winner Ryder Hesjedal and Alberto Contador, who was unable to start the 2012 Giro due to a doping ban, were impressed: Hesjedal, the first Canadian to be successful at the Giro, wants to concentrate fully on the race over the boot next year. Contador felt that this Giro could suit him well.
The organisers of the Tour of Italy have certainly come up with a lot of ideas to offer an exciting Tour of Italy. From the start in Naples on 4 May 2013, the loop will cover more than 3,400 kilometres through almost the whole of Italy. Unlike in previous years, the Giro will not finish in Milan or Rome, but in the northern Italian city of Brescia on 26 May.
After three mountain finishes in Friuli, in Bardonecchia and on the Galibier Pass, the decision is likely to be made on three subsequent stages in the final week: it starts with the 19.45 kilometre mountain time trial on Monte Baldo, where the riders have to climb 1,000 metres in altitude. On the following day, the route leads from Ponte di Legno over the Gavia Pass and the Stelvio Pass to the mountain finish in the Martello Valley at an altitude of over 2,000 metres. On the penultimate day of the Giro, the queen stage of the tour leads from Schlanders in the Vinschgau Valley over the Karer Pass, the San Pellegrino Pass and the Giau Pass to the Auronzo Hut at the foot of the Three Peaks at an altitude of 2,345 metres.
The professional cyclists have to compete against the clock three times: In the 17.4 kilometre long team time trial, which will be held on the second stage on the island of Ischia, then in the 55.5 kilometre long challenging individual time trial in Gabicce Mare and finally in the aforementioned mountain time trial.
The negative side of the varied route: many and very long transfers between the stages - and probably only four good chances of victory for the sprinters on the few flat stages.
