Maximilian Schachmann has lost his second place in the Tour de Suisse due to a crash.
The German cycling champion from Team Bora-hansgrohe was involved in a mass crash around four kilometres before the finish of the 176.9-kilometre third stage from Aesch to Grenchen and suffered minor injuries. The victory in the sprint was secured by former champion Peter Sagan from Team TotalEnergies ahead of Frenchman Bryan Coquard and Alexander Kristoff from Norway. It was the 18th victory in the Tour of Switzerland for the former world champion from Slovakia.
Schachmann had secured a two-second time credit for second place behind Britain's Geraint Thomas at the last intermediate sprint and thus reduced his gap to overall leader Stephen Williams to two seconds. After his crash, the Berlin finished in 71st place, 53 seconds behind and dropped back to 17th place overall.
The Dane Andreas Kron (+6 seconds) is the new runner-up behind the Briton Williams, ahead of Thomas (+7). The fourth stage this Wednesday leads over 190.8 kilometres from Grenchen to Brunnen. The Tour de Suisse ends on Sunday with the individual time trial in Vaduz.
