Berlin (dpa) - Long-time Telekom cycling pro Rolf Aldag is to become the new sports director at German racing team Bora-hansgrohe. The 53-year-old Westphalian has surprisingly taken over from Enrico Poitschke, who is leaving the WorldTour team after ten years, the team from Raubling announced.

Aldag has been working as a sports director in cycling for over 15 years. After the Telekom doping scandal, he once rebuilt the Bonn team with Bob Stapleton. He then also worked for Omega-Pharma-Quickstep, Dimension Data, Bahrain-Victorious and in women's cycling.

"This was probably the most difficult decision for me in the last ten years, because I owe Enrico a huge debt of gratitude," said team boss Ralph Denk, adding: "In recent months, however, I have increasingly realised that if we want to develop as a team, we probably also need a change in the sporting management."

Aldag once made a name for himself as an important assistant to Jan Ullrich and Erik Zabel in the Telekom team. He took part in the Tour de France ten times before seamlessly transitioning into a career as an official. Looking ahead to his new role, Aldag spoke of a "very talented group of riders." Now it is a matter of moulding a successful team from these guys, the sports management and the coaches.
