The German Cycling Federation will have to wait a little longer for its second medal at the Road World Championships in Montreal. The highly rated U23 men’s team clearly missed out on a medal; Moritz Mauss was the best-placed German, finishing 21st in the 174.2-kilometre race. The five German riders were well placed for much of the race, but failed to capitalise on the decisive attacks in the final stages. As a result, the bronze medal won by Franziska Koch in the individual time trial remains the only medal for German Cycling so far.
The American Ashlin Barry secured gold in the junior category as a soloist. Trailing by 53 seconds, the Spaniard Hector Alvarez, who had been tipped as the favourite, took second place ahead of the Norwegian Jesper Stiansen.
The Germans’ next – and probably last – chance of a medal comes on Saturday. In the women’s road race, Franziska Koch has a very good chance, and Liane Lippert also has reason to be hopeful. It has already been twelve years since the last medal in the road race. Back then, Lisa Brennauer won silver in Ponferrada, Spain.
