Cycling star Tadej Pogacar has won the time trial at the Tour de Suisse and is on course for overall victory. However, the Slovenian from UAE Team Emirates-XRG had to fight hard for his second stage win. After 23.8 kilometres around Aarburg, the 27-year-old had a lead of just 0.31 seconds over the Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech), who had led for much of the race. Third place went to the former Norwegian time trial world champion Tobias Foss (Netcompany Ineos), who finished six seconds behind Pogacar. Pogacar’s team-mate Nils Politt came 14th.
In the general classification, Pogacar – who is fine-tuning his form in Switzerland ahead of the Tour de France – extended his lead over Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (EF Education) to 4 minutes and 22 seconds. Sunday’s final stage covers 4,450 metres of climbing and, following two category 1 climbs, finishes with a mountain finish in Villars-sur-Ollon.
