The young Mexican star Isaac del Toro has won the dress rehearsal for the World Championships road race, taking victory at the Grand Prix de Montréal. The heir apparent to superstar Tadej Pogacar claimed victory after 214.4 kilometres in a sprint duel with the young French star Paul Seixas. The World Championships in Montreal begin next Sunday, with the road race taking place on 27 September.
Following the withdrawal from the World Championships of two-time world champion Pogacar, who suffered fractures to his collarbone and a cervical vertebra during the Vuelta, the race in Canada is likely to be wide open. However, as a Mexican, Del Toro has the disadvantage of having to race with virtually no team support. At the Tour de France, he finished third overall behind his team-mate Pogacar and the Belgian double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel. He went on to win the Tour of Germany as well.
