Four masked men broke into Cavendish's house in Essex at night on 27 November 2021. They threatened him and his family with a knife and stole items, including two luxury watches and three smartphones, worth the equivalent of almost 800,000 euros. Sprint star Cavendish, who was riding for Deceuninck-Quick Step at the time, was at home recovering from injuries sustained during the six-day race in Ghent, Belgium.
The 31-year-old alleged perpetrator from London denied the offence in court, but was found guilty of two counts of robbery. A second defendant from London was acquitted by the jury.
A 28-year-old man who had admitted to the offence had already been convicted. Fingerprints on Cavendish's wife's mobile phone helped the police to track down the perpetrators. The police are currently searching for two other men.
