Jonas Vingegaard, the two-time overall winner who was forced to withdraw from the Tour de France, suffered a broken collarbone and several grazes in his fateful crash. This was announced by the Dane’s team. “Due to the severity of the collarbone fracture, surgery has been recommended and will be carried out in the coming days,” the statement said.
The rider who had been second overall had crashed at a roundabout 22 kilometres from the finish of the 15th stage, on the approach to the final climb to the Plateau de Solaison. With his right arm and shoulder bandaged, the Dane was taken away in an ambulance. He was later taken to the mobile X-ray unit.
Vingegaard has had his fair share of bad luck with crashes in the past
Going into the stage, Vingegaard was 4 minutes and 30 seconds behind the dominant leader Tadej Pogacar in the general classification and was therefore still on course for a podium finish in Paris. The Visma team captain had won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023. In each of the past two years, he finished second overall.
Vingegaard has been unlucky with crashes on several occasions in the past. As recently as 2024, he suffered a serious crash in the Tour of the Basque Country and had just recovered in time for the start of the Tour. Last year, he crashed during the historic Paris–Nice race and was forced to withdraw.
