The only African team in the UCI WorldTour will no longer be part of cycling's premier league in 2022 for financial reasons.
Team Qhubeka NextHash, based in Johannesburg, South Africa, has announced that it has not been able to secure the long-term future of the team. The team has therefore decided to cease operations in the UCI WorldTour as of 31 December, the racing team explained.
Qhubeka was the first African team to take part in the Tour de France in 2015. The team came to the fore there thanks to Daniel Teklehaimanot from Eritrea, who wore the polka dot jersey of the best climber for four days. The team has been racing in the WorldTour with a UCI licence since 2016.
Next year, Team Qhubeka intends to continue racing as a UCI Continental team based in Italy. The only German rider in the team's ranks, Max Walscheid (28), is moving to the French Cofidis team for the new season.
