The Dane from Jumbo-Visma won the second stage of the O Gran Camino in north-west Spain ahead of the Portuguese Ruben Guerreiro (Movistar) and the Spaniard Ion Izagirre (Cofidis). His German team-mate Simon Geschke finished eleventh on the day. Vingegaard also took the overall lead in the four-day race.
On the 184.3 kilometre route up Monte Trega, Vingegaard waited until the final climb. Around two kilometres before the finish, the 26-year-old launched an attack that nobody could follow and celebrated his 13th victory as a professional. It was also a sign in the long-distance duel with his Tour rival Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) from Slovenia, who won his first three races this year.
On Thursday the first stage of the race was abandoned about 20 kilometres before the finish due to heavy snowfall and after clear protests from the riders. For Vingegaard, the second category race is the start of the season.
