Protesters have caused an interruption to the men's road race at the World Cycling Championships in Scotland.
Around 80 kilometres after the start in Edinburgh, the peloton came to a standstill on a country road. After an interruption of just over an hour, the elite men's road race at the 2023 World Cycling Championships continued.
TV footage showed a police car fighting its way through the group of riders. The president of the world federation, David Lappartient, discussed with the riders, some of whom were warming up in the support cars.
The professional cyclists could have passed the obstacle, but there was no way for the team cars to get past. At the time of the interruption, a nine-man lead group was in the lead with a lead of almost seven minutes. 271.1 kilometres were scheduled for the road race. After the start in Edinburgh, the route headed towards Glasgow, where a 14.3 kilometre circuit was to be completed ten times.
