These included offences relating to the use or attempted use, possession, placing on the market or administration of prohibited substances for doping purposes in cycling, according to the press release. Thurau, the son of former cycling star Dietrich Thurau, ended his active career at the end of 2019.
The 33-year-old's ban begins on the day of the decision, which, according to the Nada, was made on 19 August. The voluntarily recognised six months since the provisional suspension on 9 March should therefore be taken into account. All of Thurau's competition results between 21 December 2010 and 9 March 2021 are to be annulled, meaning that medals, points and prizes will also be forfeited. The Nada opened an investigation into the former professional cyclist in February. Thurau was initially unavailable for comment.
He had attracted attention as part of "Operation Aderlass" and in the criminal proceedings against the doctor Mark S.. Among other things, he was incriminated during police questioning of the cyclist Pirmin Lang in Switzerland. According to Nada, it received information from Antidoping Switzerland and the Munich public prosecutor's office "regarding several doping-related matters involving the athlete in a period from 2011 to 2014 that was not time-barred under sports law".
