On the third anniversary of Davide Rebellin's death, family, friends and professional colleagues gathered to unveil a memorial stele at the site of his fatal accident. This was reported by the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. The then 51-year-old professional cyclist was run over by a lorry at a roundabout in the municipality of Montebello Vicentino on 30 November 2022 while training near his home. He had planned to end his career at the end of 2022. The man who caused the accident, a 64-year-old German lorry driver, was sentenced to four years in prison in Italy in November 2024 for the criminal offence of road traffic homicide. He had committed a hit-and-run after the accident and returned to Germany.
Former professional colleagues such as multiple Giro winner Gilberto Simoni and Fabio Baldato attended the memorial service. Relatives of Michele Scarponi also took part. The Italian professional cyclist was also killed in a road accident during training in 2017. The stele that has now been unveiled was made possible by Lino Diquigiovanni, who sponsored the team with which Rebellin won the Flèche Wallonne in 2009, among others.
In 2004, the professional cyclist in the jersey of the German Gerolsteiner racing team won the so-called Ardennes Triple of the Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège within a week. The rider from the Veneto region later hit the headlines because he was subsequently stripped of his silver medal from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing for doping with Cera.
