After three stages in the lead, Tadej Pogacar has taken the lead in the Tirreno-Adriatico long-distance cycling race.
The 23-year-old Slovenian won the fourth stage over 202 kilometres from Cascata delle Marmore to Bellante in commanding style and climbed from third place to the top of the overall standings. The Dane Jonas Vingegaard, already relegated to second place by Pogacar in the last Tour de France, took second place ahead of the Frenchman Victor Lafay. In the overall classification, Pogacar is nine seconds ahead of the Belgian Remco Evenepoel.
On the final climb to Bellante, Pogacar countered an attack around 500 metres before the finish and took his fifth win of the season. On Friday, the contenders for overall victory are likely to battle it out again in the demanding final 155 kilometres from Sefro to Fermo. The race ends on Sunday with a stage around San Benedetto del Tronto on the Italian east coast.
