Almost two months after his crash in the Tour de France, Florian Lipowitz has been selected for the Road Cycling World Championships. The 25-year-old leads the six-man German squad for the road race in Montreal on 27 September, which also includes Maximilian Schachmann, Marco Brenner, Georg Zimmermann, Felix Engelhardt and Nico Denz. This was announced by the German Cycling Federation.
National coach Jens Zemke has selected Jasha Sütterlin and Maximilian Walscheid for the individual time trial a week earlier; Nikias Arndt will also compete in the mixed event. According to dpa reports, German time trial champion Nils Politt, who would also have been a valuable rider in the road race, was not granted permission by his team to compete in the World Championships.
In the women’s event, Franziska Koch, Ricarda Bauernfeind, Liane Lippert and Antonia Niedermaier are heading into the road race with a chance of winning medals. The quartet will be supported by Linda Riedmann. Koch and Niedermaier – who has narrowly missed out on a World Championship medal on two previous occasions – will compete in the individual time trial.
Tough racing in Italy
Lipowitz had only just made his comeback on Wednesday in a one-day race in Tuscany. The Swabian had crashed in the Tour’s individual time trial and broken his collarbone. Although the World Championships road race is not as gruelling as in the past two years, with 3,700 metres of climbing over around 270 kilometres, it offers excellent opportunities for strong climbers.
A place in the top ten is certainly a realistic prospect for Lipowitz. The Red Bull professional is currently building up the necessary racing experience in Italy and is in action again today at the Coppa Sabatini. Two more races are to follow. Following the withdrawal of defending champion Tadej Pogacar, Lipowitz’s Belgian team-mate and former world champion Remco Evenepoel is considered the favourite for the World Championship race.
