Grenchen (dpa) - Lea Sophie Friedrich from Cottbus has won the Keirin final at the European Track Cycling Championships.

The 21-year-old won in Grenchen/Switzerland ahead of Olena Starikova from Ukraine and Jana Tyschtschenko from Russia. Friedrich had previously won silver in the team sprint and sprint.

"I really wanted to get it today. For me it was an Olympic revenge because I couldn't win anything in the keirin. I came here without any great expectations. It's such a great feeling to be able to go for gold now. I'm still completely blown away," said the Olympic silver medallist in the team sprint.

In the men's keirin, former world champion Joachim Eilers from Chemnitz took third place. European champion was Jeffrey Hoogland from the Netherlands ahead of Tom Derache from France. Eilers had missed out on qualifying for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, but has recently shown a clear upturn in form and can now hope for a ticket to the World Championships in Roubaix (20 October).

Just under two weeks before the World Championships, the women of the German Cycling Federation (BDR) in particular were already in good form, winning seven medals. After 22 decisions, a total of eight medals (3 gold / 3 silver / 2 silver) were in the statistics. At the 2020 European Championships in Plovdiv, the BDR was only represented by Maximilian Levy from Cottbus, who has since retired and won two gold medals due to the coronavirus pandemic.
