Rosenheim (dpa) - Track cyclist Leif Lampater has suffered a scaphoid fracture in his left hand and has therefore written off his Olympic participation.

"Rio will certainly be nothing. The loss will be pretty big now," said the 33-year-old. "The scaphoid just needs quite a long time and has to be spared a lot to rule out permanent damage," said Lampater, who qualified for the Olympic Games with the German track foursome. He finished sixth with the German quartet in London at the beginning of March.

Lampater crashed in Denmark on 1 May and it was not until a week later that the injury, initially diagnosed as a bruise, was recognised as a fracture. "Any absence is bad. Leif did a good job in the winter, but of course it doesn't look so good for him now for the Olympics," said national coach Sven Meyer. The DOSB will nominate the Rio riders on 31 May.

The German track foursome has qualified for the Summer Games for the first time since 2004 and is aiming for a bronze medal in Rio. Lampater already finished fourth twelve years ago in Athens. The rider from RSV Irschenberg had recommended himself for a comeback in the oval last winter with strong performances.
