Lennard Kämna starts the difficult final week of the 106th Giro d'Italia in seventh place overall. One day after the second stage victory of his team-mate Nico Denz, the German hopeful finished just behind the group of favourites on the 15th stage over 195 kilometres from Seregno to Bergamo.

American professional cyclist Brandon McNulty took the day's victory in the sprint of a three-man breakaway group ahead of the Irishman Ben Healy and the Italian Marco Frigo.

Frenchman Bruno Armirail defended the overall winner's pink jersey after making up a lot of time on the previous day. However, the 29-year-old is unlikely to be in contention for overall victory on the difficult mountain stages in the final week. 1:08 minutes behind Armirail is former Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas in second place, with co-favourite Primoz Roglic (Slovenia) a further two seconds behind. Kämna is 3:02 minutes behind.

After the second rest day, the Giro will continue on Tuesday with the 16th stage over 203 kilometres from Sabio Chiese to Monte Bondone. Five mountain classifications, including the final climb at an altitude of 1632 metres, are then to be tackled.
