Raubling (dpa) - More than five months after his last race to date, professional cyclist Lennard Kämna has made a surprising comeback.

Kämna's racing team Bora-hansgrohe announced that the 25-year-old will not be riding on the road, however, but will be competing in the Cape Epic mountain bike race in South Africa from 17 to 24 October.

"I'm particularly pleased that Lennard is making his comeback with this race. He was enthusiastic about the idea right from the start and I think that the timing is also very good for him," said team boss Ralph Denk. Following the Cape Epic, Kämna will start preparing for the new season.

Kämna was last in action at the Tour of the Algarve at the beginning of May, but then withdrew due to physical problems. Later, when last year's Tour de France stage winner missed the 2021 Tour of France, he also reported a mental block. "Of course I have huge respect for the Cape Epic, but I'm also looking forward to it. There is a general tendency for some riders to race more and more often in different disciplines," said Kämna.

Alongside Kämna, Bora-hansgrohe is sending Ben Zwiehoff to the Cape of Good Hope. The 27-year-old comes from a mountain bike background, was European team champion and switched to road racing in 2020. This is the first time the best German racing team has entered the MTB sport.
