Jan Ullrich is auctioning off his Pinarello racing bike from 1998, including his signed yellow jersey. The proceeds will be donated to support programmes for young cyclists.

Ex-professional cyclist Jan Ullrich is auctioning off his original racing bike from 1998 with the help of the bicycle marketplace buycycle. Ullrich is using the proceeds from the auction to support German programmes for young cyclists. The Pinarello bike is already being auctioned on buycycle.com. The auction will run for the entire duration of the Tour de France until 21 July and all proceeds will be donated exclusively to youth development programmes.

Jan Ullrich's original racing bike

The Team Telekom Pinarello racing bike from 1998 is in pristine original condition and reminds Ullrich "of his toughest training sessions and the most important races of his career." All components, including the handlebar tape, the Continental tyres, the Campagnolo Record Titanium groupset and the striking Telekom paintwork, are in their original, unaltered condition. And this special bike also comes with a little secret: its Sigma bike computer. Ullrich himself is curious to know how many annual kilometres it has stored: "I hope a little over 40,000 km," he is quoted as saying in the press release for the auction. Only the highest bidder will soon be able to find out whether he is right or wrong.

The auction of the historic Pinarello is a contribution to the future of cycling. "It is a matter close to my heart to support the next generation of cyclists. With this auction, I want to give young talents the chance to realise their dreams and further promote the sport that I love so much," he explains his motives. "We are proud to be part of this great initiative and to support the auction. This auction is a highlight for all cycling fans. We believe that with our reach we will generate enough attention to raise a considerable sum for young cycling enthusiasts," says Theo Golditchuk, co-founder of buycycle.
