"There's something strange going on. For some reason that we don't know, (Armstrong's) enemies want to win a nice trophy and put an end to his career," said the most successful Spanish cyclist of all time in an article for the Madrid sports newspaper "Marca".
If Armstrong were to be stripped of his seven Tour victories, Indurain would once again be the record champion of the Tour de France with five consecutive victories. The 48-year-old former professional cyclist said that he did not want this to happen because history had already been written. As long as no universally recognised body decides otherwise, Armstrong will retain all his Tour victories.
According to Indurain, there are too many authorities and interests in the fight against doping. "I don't know if it's real or not, but from the outside it's a ruthless war between these organisations. In the Armstrong case, it's a personal war by I don't know who against him."
