Two men have been jailed for a long time for the attack on British cycling star Mark Cavendish and his family.
A court in the city of Chelmsford sentenced the perpetrators to 15 and 12 years in prison respectively. They forced their way into the sportsman's home in November 2021 and threatened him and his wife with a knife. They then stole several items, including two watches, worth the equivalent of almost 800,000 euros.
A 28-year-old defendant had confessed to the offence and therefore received a slightly shorter sentence. His 31-year-old partner had denied the allegations but was found guilty by a jury. "This was a planned, targeted, orchestrated and ruthless crime against an internationally renowned sportsman and his wife," said the judge. Two other perpetrators are still being sought.
