At the start of the 2023 season, TOUR took a look at ten youngsters who have a good chance of making a breakthrough in the professional peloton. The majority of these talented cyclists have come through.

Topics in this article

Andrea Piccolo

After many team changes in the past, the Italian now seems to have arrived at Team EF Education EasyPost. This has had a positive effect on his performance. Highlight so far: a day in red at the Vuelta.

Andreas Leknessand

Leknessund also wore the leader's jersey at a Grand Tour - and even for almost a week at the Giro. The Norwegian has continued to develop his circuit rider qualities.

Olav Kooij

Behind high-flyer Jasper Philipsen, Kooij was the best sprinter of the year. The Dutchman was particularly impressive in the second half of the year.

Romain Gregoire

Placing the burden of being the next Tour hope of an entire nation on the young Frenchman would be a mistake that the Grande Nation has made all too often with talent. But Gregoire has shown that he has the potential to develop into a good tour rider.

Leo Hayter

Due to injury, Hayter was barely able to show what he was made of. However, when he was at the start, he did what was expected of him.

Magnus Sheffield

Unfortunately, the American is far too often associated with the death of Gino Mäder for no good reason. Yet Sheffield has proven that he is also ready to make headlines in sporting terms. Not just as a strong time trialist.

Mattias Skjelmose

In the slipstream of Danish stars Vingegaard and Pedersen, another up-and-coming star is maturing. By winning the Tour de Suisse, Skjelmose has positioned himself for bigger challenges.

Marco Brenner

Brenner has lost his role as the great hope in German cycling for the time being. This season, too, he was unable to fulfil the expectations he had set himself with his huge successes as a junior. In addition, incorrect insoles prevented him from taking part in the Vuelta.

Cian Uijtdebroeks

With his strong performance at the Vuelta at the latest, Uijtdebroeks became the talk of the town. But these were not the biggest headlines of the year for the young Belgian. The dispute over his future team could have an impact on his further development.

Arnaud De Lie

Like Kooij, De Lie was also difficult to beat in sprints this year, but more in one-day races than in tours. The Belgian finally made his breakthrough with his first World Tour victory.
