The 19-year-old junior cyclist Sara Piffer from Italy has died as a result of an accident. This was announced by the Italian cycling association ACCPI and her team Mendelspeck.
According to the ANSA news agency, Piffer was hit by a car near the northern Italian city of Trento on Friday morning. The public prosecutor's office in Trento has opened an investigation into road traffic homicide.
Piffer had been travelling with her brother. She leaves a gap that cannot be filled, wrote her team Mendelspeck. They want to remember her and her smile.
Fatal accidents happen again and again in cycling. In September last year, 18-year-old junior rider Muriel Furrer from Switzerland died after a crash at the World Junior Championships in Zurich. In the recent past, the deaths of Swiss rider Gino Mäder (2023) and Norwegian rider André Drege (2024) shocked the cycling world.
