Palma de Mallorca (dpa) - Two weeks after their successful performance at the World Championships, the two Cottbus riders Emma Hinze and Lea Sophie Friedrich have also impressed in the first round of the newly created Champions League in track cycling.

Sprint world champion Hinze secured the overall leader's jersey in the Sprint Champions League for the first time after winning the sprint and finishing second in the keirin. Stefan Bötticher from Chemnitz is in second place in the overall standings after the first of the five stages thanks to a victory in the keirin.

In an all-German sprint final, Hinze prevailed against three-time Roubaix World Champion Lea Sophie Friedrich. The 24-year-old had previously finished second in the keirin event behind Olympic champion Kelsey Mitchel from Canada. Lea Friedrich, who won the European and world title in this discipline in October, finished fourth. The 21-year-old is in third place in the overall Champions League sprint rankings.

Bötticher finished fourth in the sprint competition. In the keirin final, the 29-year-old was even able to leave the recently dominant Dutch riders behind and surprisingly ride to victory on the day. In the overall standings, the former world champion is in second place behind the Dutchman Harrie Lavreysen.

Maximilian Levy from Cottbus is 15th in the overall standings in his short comeback. Levy, who won the first of his ten World Championship medals 14 years ago in the Palma Arena with bronze, returned to the wooden oval for the Champions League despite his retirement in September. However, the 34-year-old was without a chance at the start of the series with 13th place in the sprint and an elimination in the keirin.
