Colombian road cycling champion Sergio Higuita of the German Bora-hansgrohe team has won the 101st edition of the Tour of Catalonia.
On the seventh and final stage over 138.6 kilometres, the 24-year-old was able to maintain his lead in the overall standings over former Giro champion and Olympic champion Richard Carapaz from Ecuador. The final stage was won by the Italian Andrea Bagioli.
It was the sixth win of the season for the German Bora team, which has been decimated by illness and injury in recent weeks. Higuita switched from Team EF Education to Bora at the start of the year.
Meanwhile, European champion Sonny Colbrelli, who collapsed at the start of the tour, has returned to his Italian homeland. As the 31-year-old is now in a stable condition, he was allowed to leave the hospital in Girona on Saturday, his racing team Bahrain Victorious announced on Sunday. Colbrelli is to undergo further examinations in Italy to determine the cause of his cardiac arrhythmia.
Colbrelli collapsed and fell unconscious after the final sprint of the opening stage. The 31-year-old had to undergo cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
