Professional cyclist Michael Valgren has won the 17th stage of the 109th Giro d'Italia. The 34-year-old Dane celebrated his only stage win to date in one of the three grand tours in the province of Trento. After 202 slightly hilly kilometres between Cassano d'Adda and Andalo, the Norwegian Andreas Leknessund finished second, with the Italian Damiano Caruso in third place.
Jonas Vingegaard remains at the top of the overall standings in the pink jersey with a comfortable lead. The two-time Tour de France champion from Denmark is 4:03 minutes ahead of Austrian Felix Gall and 4:27 minutes ahead of Dutchman Thymen Arensman.
On Thursday, the professional cyclists can expect a slightly undulating section on the 171-kilometre 18th stage between Fai della Paganella and Pieve di Soligo in north-eastern Italy. The tour ends in Rome on Sunday.
