Top favourite Jonas Vingegaard has celebrated his second stage win at the Giro d'Italia and is closing in on the pink jersey. The two-time Tour champion from Denmark took victory on the ninth stage at the mountain arrival in Corno alle Scala, further reducing the gap to the Portuguese leader Afonso Eulalio.
Vingegaard won after 184 kilometres with a lead of twelve seconds over the Austrian Felix Gall, who had already taken second place in the mountain finish up to the Blockhaus on Friday. Eulalio lost a further 41 seconds to Vingegaard, but still has a lead of 2:24 minutes over the Dane.
The decision was made less than a kilometre before the finish when Vingegaard launched the decisive attack. Gall was no longer able to react. The duo had previously caught up with the Italian breakaway rider Giulio Ciccone.
After the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, Vingegaard also wants to win the third grand tour at the Giro. Only seven riders have managed that.
After the rest day, the Giro continues on Tuesday with the 42-kilometre individual time trial from Viareggio to Massa.
