German cycling star Florian Lipowitz has made a good impression in his first major test since his serious crash at the Tour de France. Exactly 50 days after breaking his collarbone in the individual time trial on Lake Geneva, the 25-year-old crossed the finish line with the peloton in glorious sunshine at the Giro della Toscana. With 50 kilometres to go, the 2025 Tour de France third-place finisher even led the peloton at times, doing valuable work at the front for his Red Bull team.
Victory in the one-day race over 189.4 kilometres, which started and finished in Pontedera, went to Lipowitz’s team-mate Giulio Pellizzari of the German Red Bull team. The Italian won ahead of Jordan Jegat from France and fellow Italian Christian Scaroni.
With four races in Italy, Lipowitz is aiming to regain his competitive edge. If everything goes to plan, the young Swabian could line up at the World Championships in Montreal (20–27 September). In Canada, Lipowitz could be in contention for medals in the individual time trial and the road race. However, the Red Bull team has not yet given the go-ahead for the World Championships. Superstar Tadej Pogacar will be missing from the line-up in Montreal. The five-time Tour winner suffered a heavy crash during the Vuelta and subsequently ended his season.
