French professional cyclist Alex Baudin is the second professional cyclist after Nairo Quintana to test positive for the painkiller Tramadol during a Grand Tour.
The rider from the AG2R Citroën team was found to have taken opiates on stage 17 of this year's Giro d'Italia, which led to a subsequent disqualification. His team confirmed a corresponding disqualification by the UCI.
Taking Tramadol is not a doping offence, but a violation of the medical rules of the federation. Tramadol has been banned in competition by the UCI since 1 March 2019, but is not on the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) banned list. Baudin is therefore not banned.
The first Tramadol case in one of the three grand tours was caused by Quintana in last year's Tour de France. The 26-year-old was subsequently stripped of his sixth place overall, but his appeal to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport was unsuccessful.
