Phil Bauhaus narrowly missed out on his first stage win at the 105th Giro d'Italia. The 27-year-old sprinter from Bocholt was narrowly beaten into second place by the French serial winner Arnaud Démare on the 13th stage over 150 kilometres from Sanremo to Cuneo.
Former world champion Mark Cavendish from Great Britain came third. It was Démare's third stage win at this year's Giro and his eighth success overall.
"I was fast. The finish line came five metres too early for me. Second place is a shitty result for a sprinter," said Bauhaus on TV channel Eurosport. It was the professional cyclist's fifth top ten finish in the 2022 Tour of Italy.
Emanuel Buchmann moved up one place to eighth in the overall standings after Frenchman Romain Bardet had to abandon on Friday. The previous fourth overall was taken ill on Thursday and his condition worsened overnight. Buchmann is still 1:09 minutes behind the Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez, who has been wearing the pink jersey since the fourth stage, when he finished second behind Lennard Kämna on the Etna.
On Saturday, the classement riders will be challenged more on the 14th stage. On the 147-kilometre section from Santena to Turin, there are four second-category and one third-category mountain to conquer. The Tour of Italy ends in Verona on 29 May.
