After his coup on Mount Etna, Lennard Kämna will start the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia today, Wednesday, in an unusual outfit.
The 25-year-old professional cyclist was only 39 seconds short of the overall winner's pink jersey after his victory in the mountain finish, but he now wears the blue jersey of the best climber. "This is the first jersey I've ever worn in my professional career. That makes me all the more proud," said Kämna, who is 40 points ahead of the overall Giro leader Juan Pedro Lopez (18) in the mountains classification.
Kämna had secured the stage win on the volcano in stage 4, the second time he had won a stage in a grand tour. In 2020, the North German had triumphed at the Tour de France in Villard-de-Lans. In between, however, mental problems had also set Kämna back. "I'm the same rider as in 2020 with the same abilities," said Kämna.
The 2014 junior world champion has thus achieved his goal at the Giro. Over the next few days, he should also help his three captains Emanuel Buchmann, Wilco Kelderman (Netherlands) and Jai Hindley (Australia). The trio reached the finish in the group of co-favourites on Mount Etna. "Things are going in the right direction for us," said Kämna. For the highly talented North German anyway.
