Rome has been reached, the peloton has covered almost 3500 kilometres in the last three weeks. The final 131 kilometres will take them through the Italian capital, starting in the Esposizione Universale di Roma district, which was built for the 1942 World's Fair, as in previous years.
From there, the route heads south along the Tyrrhenian coast to Lido di Ostia. There, the intermediate sprint is taken and turned round. After 50 kilometres, the final circuit through the city centre is reached. 9.5 kilometres that have to be cycled eight times. Past the Colosseum, within sight of the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, on the way back directly along the banks of the Tiber. The finish line is at the Circus Maximus.
Parts of the lap are covered with easy-to-ride cobblestones, which should not cause any problems, at least in dry conditions. 500 metres before the finish, there is a small wave with a five per cent gradient, and the 350 metre long home straight itself is also slightly uphill.
The overall classification is cemented, the mountain jersey is awarded. However, the battle for the Maglia Ciclamino remains exciting. The early intermediate sprint after 23 kilometres could give Jhonatan Narvaez (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) the chance to collect much-needed points for the points classification before Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) has the chance to strike back in the finale.
The name Magnier would fit in well with Mark Cavendish, Tim Merlier and Olav Kooij, who have won the last three sprint finishes in Rome since 2023. However, the name of Jonathan Milan (Lidl - Trek), who contrary to all expectations has not yet been able to celebrate a victory at the Giro, would also be a good fit. It's his last chance in 2026.
If he can recognise them. Milan was one of the loudest critics of the route on the supposed sprint stages, which repeatedly presented minor or major difficulties in the finals. The finale in Rome was no exception. Halfway between the Devil's Lap and the finish, another five per cent hurdle awaits the sprinters.
