The Giro d'Italia 2024 starts in Piedmont. However, the Grande Partenza is anything but easy. A mountain finish is already on the programme on the second day.

On Monday, the organiser RCS published the first three stages of the Tour of Italy 2024 plus the start location of the fourth stage. For the fourth time in the history of the Giro, the race will start in Piedmont. "It will be a spectacular Grande Partenza (Grand Start in German; editor's note). We start with demanding stages where the contenders for the pink jersey have to be ready from the start," says race director Mauro Vegni.

Giro d'Italia 2024 route: the first three stages

1st stage: Venaria Reale - Turin, 136 kilometres

The first section is a mass start stage over 136 kilometres from Venaria Reale to Turin, with the Colle Maddalena. The mountain is 6.1 kilometres long with an average gradient of 7.4 percent. The summit is reached around 20 kilometres before the finish. The riders also pass the Superga climb at kilometre 80, 75 years after the Superga plane crash in which almost the entire AC Turin football team died.

Stage 2: San Francesco al Campo - Santuario di Oropa, 150 kilometres

The race continues with a mountain finish - on the second day of the tour. 150 kilometres to Santuario di Oropa. 25 years after Marco Pantani conquered the mountain with a fabulous time at the Giro in the heyday of the EPO era. The final climb has an average gradient of 6.2 per cent over 11.8 kilometres. The first elimination race in the overall classification could therefore take place on the second day.

Stage 3: Novara - Fossano, 165 kilometres

The third day of the Giro d'Italia 2024 could be a spoil for the sprinters. 165 kilometres from Novara to Fossano. However, the finale of the stage is tricky with a short climb to the finish.

It is not yet clear exactly what will happen after the third day. Only that stage four will begin in Acqui Terme. So far, there is only speculation about the rest of the routeIt will be officially presented on Friday, 13 October.
