Filippo Ganna has won the individual time trial of the 109th Giro d'Italia. The two-time world champion from Italy won the 42 kilometre stage from Viareggio to Massa with a lead of 1:54 minutes over Dutchman Thymen Arensman. The big Giro favourite Jonas Vingegaard was only 13th, 3:00 minutes behind, while Max Walscheid from Heidelberg finished sixth, 2:17 minutes slower than Ganna.
In the overall standings, Vingegaard came a little closer to the leader's pink jersey despite his surprisingly slow time trial. After just over half of the 21 stages, the Dane is now only 27 seconds behind the Portuguese rider Alfonso Eulalio. Arensman is now third, 1:57 minutes behind Eulalio.
On Wednesday, the profile will be much more demanding than the completely flat time trial. From Porcari, the riders head north-west along the Mediterranean coast for 195 kilometres. There are four mountain classifications to conquer, the last one just 12.5 kilometres before the finish.
