Enric Mas is surely THE winner of this autumn’s cycling season.
Enric Mas’s meteoric rise is one of the most remarkable developments in cycling this autumn of 2026. At the start of August, the Spaniard was virtually unknown in the UCI World Rankings; barely ten weeks later, he is among the very best in the world.

From mediocrity to the very top

When the UCI World Rankings were updated on 4 August, Enric Mas found himself in 368th place. With 257 points, the Movistar team captain was far behind the world’s best riders and played no part in the battle for the top spots. By mid-October, the picture was completely different: with 2,798 points, the Spaniard is ranked 15th and is currently among the world’s top 20 riders. His leap of 353 places is likely to be one of the biggest rises by a top rider during this period.

The reason for this development lies primarily in late summer and autumn. Enric Mas had already shown signs of improving form by finishing fifth in the Vuelta a Burgos. However, the 31-year-old took the decisive step shortly afterwards in the Vuelta a España. With his overall victory He racked up a huge haul of points and, within a matter of weeks, catapulted himself back into regions of the rankings he hadn’t reached for quite some time. The Movistar professional made yet another strong impression at the Tour of Lombardy. There, he finished second behind the winner, Paul Seixas and, thanks to this result alone, climbed a further seven places in the world rankings.

What is particularly noteworthy here is the comparison with the other riders in the top 20. The list features largely the same names at the start of August as it does in mid-October. Whilst the order has shifted, there have been hardly any fundamental changes. Whilst riders such as Tadej Pogačar, Remco Evenepoel, Isaac Del Toro and Jonas Vingegaard largely maintained their positions at the top (despite injuries), Enric Mas fought his way back into the limelight from the lower reaches of the rankings. No other rider in the current top 20 made a leap anywhere near as significant during the period under review.

Other autumn winners

Alongside Enric Mas, several other riders also managed to improve their positions significantly. Wout van Aert put in a particularly impressive performance, moving up from 13th to 7th place and picking up almost 1,000 extra UCI points in the process. The Belgian also benefited from a very strong performance in the Vuelta a España, where he won two stages and the sprint jersey.

Giulio Ciccone is also among the winners of recent weeks. Thanks to his strong performances in Canada, at the European Championships in Slovenia and in the Tour of Lombardy, the Italian climbed twelve places, moving up from 28th to 16th, and gained over 700 points. The autumn has been similarly successful for Felix Gall, who moved up from 15th to 9th place – primarily thanks to his third place in the Vuelta a España – and thus broke into the top 10. Richard Carapaz also made a significant leap forward. The Ecuadorian worked his way up from 19th to 11th place and collected more than 500 additional points.

Whilst many of these riders consolidated their already strong positions, none of them achieved anything quite like Enric Mas. Rising from 368th place to 15th in just over two months: the Spaniard is arguably the biggest winner of the 2026 autumn cycling season.
