Jonas Vingegaard has extended his lead in the Giro d'Italia with his fourth stage win. The big favourite from Denmark won the 16th stage ahead of the Austrian Felix Gall. The Australian Jai Hindley finished third in the mountain finish in Cari, Switzerland. Vingegaard launched the decisive attack shortly before the halfway point of the almost twelve kilometre long final climb.
In the overall standings, Vingegaard is already 4:03 minutes ahead of the new runner-up Gall. Third is Thymen Arensman, who finished fourth on the Cari stage. The Dutchman is 4:27 minutes behind Vingegaard.
On Wednesday, it's back to Italy. After 202 kilometres, the pros reach Andalo in the province of Trento. The profile is significantly less demanding, which is why breakaway riders are in with a chance. In the end, a fast climber could win.
For Pascal Ackermann, however, the Giro is over. The sprinter did not start the 16th stage. The former German champion was plagued by stomach problems. Ackermann would probably only have had a chance of winning on the final stage in Rome anyway.
