Just like the Tour de France, whose field of participants was published by the organiser A.S.O. at almost the same time, In addition to the 18 World Tour teams, five other places were up for grabs. Three of these went to the best teams from the second-tier Pro Series: Cofidis (France), Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling (Switzerland) and Tudor Pro Cycling (Switzerland). The last two spots were awarded to the Spanish second-division teams Burgos Burpellet BH and Kern-Pharma as wildcards.
The Vuelta starts on 22 August with an individual time trial in Monaco. The final stage ends on 13 September in Granada. A total of seven mountain finishes and 58,000 metres of climbing await the pros. Due to the demanding route profile, quite a few experts speak of the toughest Tour of Spain of all time.
Last year, the Vuelta made inglorious news. During the Grand Tour, there were repeated protests against the Israel-Premier Tech team, as a result of which, among other things, the final stage had to be cancelled. The racing team with an Israeli identity subsequently gave up its identity. Since this season, the team has been competing as NSN Cycling with a Swiss racing licence.
