The cycling world is mourning the loss of 19-year-old Finlay Tarling. The British cyclist has died following an accident during a stage of the race. His team has announced the tragic news in a moving statement.

British cyclist Finlay Tarling has died as a result of a serious accident during the Volta a Portugal. The Portuguese Cycling Federation has confirmed the death of the 19-year-old.

Tarling rode for the NSN Development team. The NSN Cycling Team stated via X: “We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Finlay Tarling today. Fin was a much-loved member of our team, but above all he was a son, a brother and a friend to so many. We will miss him dearly.”

The eighth stage ran from Melgaco to Fafe. Following the accident – the circumstances of which the organisers have not yet disclosed – the race was neutralised and the prize-giving ceremony cancelled. The race organisers announced that further information would be provided as soon as the conditions allowed.

His older brother, Joshua Tarling (22), rides for the WorldTour team Ineos Grenadiers and, among other achievements, won bronze in the individual time trial at the 2023 World Cycling Championships.
