In December 2024, Remco Evenepoel retired in the event of an accident suffered several broken bones. During a training ride, he crashed into the door of a postbus. He is now back in the saddle for long training rides. The Belgian is currently at an altitude training camp in the Sierra Nevada with the Soudal Quick-Step Giro team, where he recently completed a 185-kilometre ride around Granada on Tuesday, which he posted on Strava.
The double Olympic champion from Paris will then return to racing in time for the Ardennes Classics at the Arrow of Brabant on 18 April. He then plans to start at the Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Tour de Romandie before putting the finishing touches to the Tour de France at the Critérium du Dauphine.
Another competition could be added to Evenepoel's racing calendar. The 25-year-old is apparently planning to compete in the Belgian individual time trial championships again this year. As the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws reports, the competition on 27 June in Brasschaat fits in with the 2022 Vuelta winner's preparations for the Tour de France. Evenepoel did not take part last year. The reigning world champion in the individual time trial has already taken part in the national time trial championships four times in his career. On his debut in 2019, he secured third place straight away. Two years later, he was second before becoming Belgian champion for the first time in Gavere in 2022. In his last participation to date in 2023, Evenepoel finished fourth after a crash.
The route for this year's time trial in Brasschaat has not yet been finalised. According to Het Laatste Nieuws the organisers will present a fast and not too technical course on 30 April. This should suit Evenepoel, who can play to his strengths on flat, fast routes in particular.
