The German track cycling team started the European Championships in Switzerland with two titles. Tim Torn Teutenberg from Cologne won the gold medal in the elimination race.
As expected, the trio from Cottbus won the women's team sprint in Grenchen. World champions Pauline Grabosch, Emma Hinze and Lea Sophie Friedrich won the final in 46.865 seconds against Great Britain (47.639) and successfully defended their European Championship title. Alessa-Catriona Pröpster from Offenbach also competed in the preliminary heat and also won gold. Third place went to the Netherlands.
Teutenberg came out on top in the elimination race at the 2023 European Track Cycling Championships. For the 20-year-old, who is regarded as one of Germany's greatest talents on the track, it was his first international medal in the elite category. "I felt really good and when there were still six of us, I thought to myself that this could be something," said the new European champion. Teutenberg won the sprint against Portugal's Rui Oliveira. Third place went to Dutch rider Philip Heijnen.
In the men's team sprint, national coach Jan van Eijden had to rebuild his team for a second time. After the retirement of Stefan Bötticher from Chemnitz With back problems, Nik Schröter from Cottbus also had to withdraw at short notice due to illness. With Luca Spiegel, Marc Jurczyk and Maximilian Dörnbach, the team finished fourth in 44.501 seconds. The victory went to Olympic champions the Netherlands.
Laura Süßemilch is back in the racing action. The 2021 world and European champion had a serious crash at the 2022 Tour de France Femmes. With the 25-year-old from Ravensburg, the German quartet finished fourth in the 4000-metre team pursuit qualifying in 4:16.942 minutes and will compete in the intermediate round on Thursday.
