European champion Sonny Colbrelli is at least able to cycle short distances again after having a defibrillator inserted, his team Bahrain-Victorious announced.
Following the operation on 31 March, the 31-year-old's condition has improved. The focus in the coming months will be on Colbrelli being able to lead a normal life again.
The Italian collapsed after the first stage of the Tour of Catalonia on 21 March and had to be resuscitated. He was then fitted with a defibrillator at the hospital in Padua. It is unclear whether Colbrelli will be able to continue his career.
Colbrelli would no longer be allowed to race in Italy and may also no longer be able to compete under his home country's licence. Legally, professional athletes with a defibrillator are prohibited from taking part in competitions in Italy.
